Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicts the technology for fully autonomous driving will be ready in five or six years, but it will then several more years to address regulatory restrictions.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Musk said the electric premium car maker is working on its own autonomous driving technology. “Tesla is going to do quite a bit of development itself,” he told the business newspaper.
Tesla, whose main product today is the Model S electric luxury sports car, will start selling a sport utility vehicle, the Model X, in early 2015. Musk told the Journal that he expects the company to start generating “free cash flow beginning in the third quarter of 2015.”
In the interview, the Tesla CEO also said progress on industry-wide development of electric vehicles is unsatisfactory. “The big car companies have been a lot slower than I thought,” he said.
